I just turned 40. And to be honest, I feel great! But I know for many, reaching a milestone age like this can stir up mixed emotions. Society constantly reminds us that time is slipping away—ads pushing anti-aging products, reminders that we’re getting older, or pressure to “have it all figured out” by a certain age.
But here’s what I’ve learned: Age is just a number. It doesn’t dictate what we can achieve or how much joy we can experience. We do. Time and age are concepts we’ve been taught to see as limits, but what if you could change your perception of time? Change your perception of your experiences?
Maybe you’ve asked yourself questions like:
I know that feeling well. For years, I felt like I was stuck on this pre-planned path. I kept telling myself that I was supposed to be further along by now—that if I hadn’t reached certain goals by a certain age, I was somehow failing. And that constant feeling of being behind everyone, or failing crippled my happiness, despite outwardly achievements.
But here’s what I’ve learned: Comparison is the killer of joy. I realized that not only was I trying to keep up with other people and simulated lives, but more importantly, I wasn’t living a life authentic to who I am, or who I wanted to be. It wasn’t until I stopped measuring my life against other people’s timelines that I started to truly live my own. I began focusing on what I wanted, on what made me feel fulfilled—regardless of what everyone else was doing.
From an early age, we’re taught when we should hit certain milestones—graduate, land that dream job, get married, start a family. It feels like we’re supposed to tick off these boxes at the “right time” in order to feel successful. But these timelines? They’re just ideas we’ve picked up along the way. They aren’t set in stone.
Think about this for a moment: Does your age really define what you’re capable of? Does it determine how much happiness, success, or love you can experience? Of course not. You are not defined by the number of years behind you. Your age doesn’t limit your ability to grow, to learn, or to pursue new dreams.
Maybe you’re reading this and thinking, “But I’ve been in the same job for years… it’s too late to change now.” Or “I’ve been in this relationship for so long, I can’t just start over.” Or maybe you’ve always wanted to do something bold—like run a marathon, start a business, or move across the country—but that nagging voice in your head keeps saying, “You’re too old for that.”
I’ve been there, many times. Several years ago, I was considering leaving a company I had been with for over 15 years. It was comfortable, familiar, and secure. But deep down, I knew I wasn’t fulfilled. I wanted more. And the idea of leaving terrified me. Starting over in a new industry, with new people, in a new environment felt like a huge risk. What if I fail? What if I’m too old to start fresh?
But the reality was that staying where I was felt worse than the fear of change. I finally made the decision to leave and pursue something new. And it was the best thing I ever did. It opened doors I never knew existed and brought more joy, growth, and opportunities than I could have imagined.
Here’s the truth: age isn’t stopping you from living the life you want—it’s your mindset. And once you realize that, the possibilities are endless.
Instead of focusing on what you haven’t done by a certain age, ask yourself: What can I still do? What dreams can I pursue now, with all the experience and knowledge I’ve gained?
You don’t have to wait for the “right time” to make a change. Does the “right time” even exist? The right time is when the vision of what you want feels more exciting than where you are now. It’s time to stop seeing age as a limitation and start viewing it as an opportunity. You have the power to redefine yourself, grow, and pursue what truly lights you up.
